MOUNT BAKER – Tuesday night’s Town Hall meeting at the Northwest African American Museum ended badly when Mayor Mike McGinn abruptly walked out.

According to the Mayor’s Community Engagement Coordinator Sol Villarreal, the event was supposed to be an opportunity for “as many people as possible who live, work, or play in Seattle to voice their concerns and offer their feedback directly to the mayor,” but shortly after the meeting started, when an attendee interrupted him to complain about Seattle Police, Mayor McGinn said it was his turn to talk.

“I’m sorry, this is my turn. You’ve had your say,” said the mayor.

“Who wants to ask me the questions?” McGinn asked. “Seriously, let’s get a show of hands. How many would like him to answer the questions?”

Then he walked out.

“This is a certain group of people and this occasionally happens,” he said as he left, but at least one attendee disagreed.

“We have a concern that you’re not listening to,” said the woman who can be seen on video provided by KIROTV. “Because we’re not white, you’re not listening.”

The incident comes just a week after Prometheus Brown, a member of the Blue Scholars hip-hop act, wrote a guest piece for the Seattle Times in which he complained about the city’s double standards.

“Shots fired in the south end, nobody cares,” he wrote. “Shots fired in the north end, everybody scared.”

According to KIROTV, McGinn’s spokesman blamed anarchists for disrupting the meeting.
