  1. Anyone know if something happened yesterday afternoon at the Rainier Beach Light Rail Station? When I got off the train around 5 p.m. there were four cop cars – SPD and Sound Transit – and a few cops standing around at the MLK Henderson intersection. I’m hoping they caught one of the kids doing the robberies, and not that another robbery or assault happened.

  2. There was an emphasis patrol yesterday around the light rail stations. That’s probably what it was.

  3. I’ve been seeing more patrol cars in my neighborhood too. Let’s hope the police can keep this up and that it has some effect on reducing crime.

  4. Dear Neighbors, Please be aware that if a school bus stops with the flashing red lights on a road that is 2 lanes each way (RAS) oncoming traffic is not required to stop. This “drives” me crazy! Thank you RVP for letting me air one of my pet peeves.

  5. Check you recent property tax bill from the county. A new tax is listed as Drainage. Drainage is the cost for the Drainage systems that are being installed to cut down the sewage out flow into lake Washington. Realize that geese, ducks and fish are the largest contributors to fecal matter in the lake. A typical 9600 sq foot lot will have a bill for almost $650 dollars. I believe this will be your cost twice a year for the next 20 or so years.

    Remember Lake Washington is as clean as it was in 1910 and they have done nothing about the contamination from the duck, geese and fish. Lake Washington is cleaner than any lake in Eastern Washington as well as most of the rest of the country including all of the Southeastern states including Texas.

  7. Has there ever been any effort to control speeding along Lake Wash. Blvd.? I usually drive 30-35 and am routinely passed by people roaring by in the oncoming traffic lane (on the curves) going at least 45 and speeding up as they go – seriously dangerous road rage, not to mention safety for bikes and peds trying to cross. Is it really that hard to drive 30?!

  8. I won’t vouch for Fred Q’s precise stats but the general sense of his argument is correct. Even environmental groups like Sound Keeper Alliance and others have been hollering about the cost of these last to Combined Sewer Overflows and the minor impact they will make on water quality in Lake Washington. The Environmenal Groups and elected officials in Seattle would prefer to spend the money on something that gets them a lot more bang for the buck (e.g. treating surface water – which the CSO does not – to keep copper out of the Lake and Sound since that really F#@cks up Salmon. The problem is that the requirement for the CSO is based on 30-year old EPA regs that require CSO’s to make sure there isn’t a sewer overflow at any location more than once per year, even if that sewer overflow does not cause polution that is threat to wildlife for human health. Been a lot of reporting on that in the Seattle Times, on NPR (its a national issue and many localities are spending hundreds of millions for the last little bit of sewer overflow, that doesn’t pollute much), and in a few national environmentally oriented journals. Fred Q bemoans the cost. Environmentalists bemoan the lack of benefit and the superior results that could be gotten with the money on other projects.

    It is legal to pass on a curve if it is a dashed yellow line. If the curve is too the left, it may be an excellent place to pass since you can look accross the curve to see oncoming traffic, including bikes, particularly at night.

    That said, you can’t exceed the speed limit to pass. So the driver, could get a ticket for speeding, but not passing, or passing on a curve, the way most of LWB is marked.

    I don’t mind folks who go 30, or even folks who go 25. What drives me crazy is people who slow down, because their is a curve to the right or something that obscures their long-range sight only a little on a corner that is not even marked with a cautionary yellow sign (by the way those, where they exist are cautionary only and not binding, you can’t get a ticket for exceeding that speed through the corner). They then speed up to 35 on the strait. Just pick a speed and hold it, even if it is under the speed limit. BE CONSISTENT, barring a cyclist that can’t be passed because of oncoming traffic, a pedestrian, OR AN ACTUAL REASON, to vary your speed.

    I noticed that (although it’s not an aspect unique to this story) while you have Lizanne Padula assiting you in your latest anti-SPD crusade you completely neglected to mention some things that both you and she clearly are aware of.

    Lizanne Padula says if ther clients had been white that the officers would have just rolled up next to them and asked them if they knew anything about the attack (ridiculous on it’s own…especially given that despite your claims in the story, the did match the description given by the victim, and were suspected of violent crime).

    But you both know that: as the officer who spotted the two individuals (named in the story) tried to contact them, they saw him and immediately turned ran. Other officers in the area had to be called in to head them off and chase them down.

    Next, you know but deliverately left out of your story that: the victim of the assault positively identified the two men in-person as the men who attacked him.

    But I supposed minor details like that get in the way of the “news”…

  11. @6, a point of clarification regarding the “Drainage” charge on the property tax bill. That charge has been on the tax bill for some time at approximately the same tax rate, and represents the shared costs of the City of Seattle’s Surface Water Utility, the utility that is responsible for storm water control and disposal (catch basin and pipe construction and maintenance, for example) throughout the city. The new facilities that will reduce sewage discharge into Lake Washington during storms are sewage facilities designed to control combined sewer overflows, or CSOs, the result of sewer lines that carry both storm water and sewage being overwhelmed by runoff from a rain storm. These pipes are sewer pipes, and the discharges occur only during larger rain events.

    The drainage pipes, however, carry only storm water runoff, and they discharge any time it rains (or when someone washes their car in the street or puts too much water on their fertilized lawn and it runs down the gutter into the catch basin). The flow from these pipes, with all the runoff from the streets, have what is generally agreed to have a much larger aggregate impact on water quality in the Lake and the Sound than the remaining CSOs.

    Not all of our neighborhoods have separate drainage (storm water) pipes, and in those that don’t the storm water and sewage are combined, resulting in the pipes that overflow during big rains.

    Not questioning your concern about whether we are making best use of the money (I definitely share that concern), but the Drainage portion of the tax bill is not, to my knowledge, a part of the payment plan for the new sewage facilities.

  12. Does anyone know what happened yesterday 2/15 around 6ish on webster and Renton Ave S? There was a concentrated police event in the parking lot of Jims mini market. SPD had arrested someone by the time I drove by. The large number of law enforcement resources on scene made me believe we might be due some big news yet I haven’t located anything noting what had happened.

  14. I’m going to say this. There is not enough room on Lk WA Blvd for both cars and bikes. It’s way too dangerous. Bikers want to ride three deep and cars are getting way too close.

    I know I can honestly say I’ve been touched by the road rage fairy. I’m trying to work through it but she has a hold on me. I’m trying to work on it but if I see people on their phone while doing 25….

  15. @Patrick Kane: No, I think Ray is right. Since Rainier Ave has four marked lanes, the driver shouldn’t have to stop for a stopped school bus that is traveling the opposite direction.

    From the link you posted: (3) The driver of a vehicle upon a highway with three or more marked traffic lanes need not stop upon meeting a school bus which is proceeding in the opposite direction and is stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging school children.

    Does RAS count as a “highway”? Maybe that’s the question. South Seattle Cop, opinion please? I, too, was always under the impression that one didn’t need to stop on RAS.

    I like the ones on “bicycle Sunday” that start riding 2-3 deep 2 miles north of where the road closure is for them, and then flip you off if you want to pass.

    Drivers in Washington state are not required to stop for a school bus on any highway (Under Washington law, any public road is defined as a highway) with three or more lanes when traveling in the opposite direction.[6] This has been interpreted to mean that when approaching a bus from the opposite direction on a normal road with a turn lane, or a road with two lanes in each direction, etc., a driver is not required to stop their vehicle. This is an unusual law, but arguably leads to a higher safety level for children, as they are then required to be dropped on the same side of the road as the bus exit on anything greater than a two-lane road as provided by RCW 46.61.370.[7]

  18. @26 good question, are there some dedicated bike lanes in the south end besides RAS south of the city??
    or are they just those “sharrow” things?

  19. 31st , McClellan, Mt Rainier Drive S, Hunter Blvd S, 50th Ave S all have dedicated bike lanes. RAS doesn’t have a bike lane of any kind that I can see. Interesting where these bike lanes are and aren’t.

  20. We get charged for rain water just hitting our property-how wrong! In Pierce County they call this, on a monthly bill, surface water run off charge.
    Remember when we were going to be fined for collecting water in rain barrels?
    Property rights take over, watch out people!
