SOUTHEAST SEATTLE – Police say it was nothing more than eye contact between two groups of young men on Sunday that led to a car chase throughout Southeast Seattle and a shooting and multi-car crash on I-5 near Boeing Field.

“It all started at approximately 4:00 p.m. when the suspects and shooting victim made eye contact at a festival in Seward Park,” wrote SPD spokesperson Jeff Kappel.

Apparently, the two parties exchanged glances at the Pista sa Nayon celebration in the park. Shortly thereafter, a 20-year old male victim, who was with his 17-year old nephew, went to park his blue Chevy Surburban on a neighborhood street outside the park and noticed the suspects he’d seen in the park following him in a gray or green car.

“The victim tried to lose the suspects in the neighborhood and a chase ensued,” wrote Kappel.

He added that the suspects started shooting at the victim, who was unarmed, in the 9000 block of Beacon Avenue South. The chase continued and more shots were fired at Beacon Avenue South and South Juneau Street, as well as at South Columbian Way and South Spokane Street.

The chase continued onto I-5 South where more shots were fired and the 20-year old driving the blue Surburban was struck in the shoulder. He then crashed into another car.

“Upon being struck by the shooting victim’s vehicle the Kia driver lost control, struck another innocent motorist in a Toyota, and overturned,” wrote Kappel.

Yet another car had its windows shot out by a stray bullet. When it was over, three people were injured and five cars were damaged. The victims were transported to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspects and their vehicle remain at large, and the Gang Unit is investigating.
