RAINIER BEACH – A Seattle police officer shot an armed man early Monday, and officials said the man was suspected in an earlier shooting.

The officer was not injured and the suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said the incident began about 1:20 a.m. when a 34-year-old man was shot at an apartment in the 7900 block of Rainier Ave South.

Jamieson said the gunman asked for someone by name and when the victim came to the door he was shot at least twice.

The gunman ran off, and about 30 minutes later an officer spotted a man matching the gunman’s description at Pritchard Island Beach.

Officials have not said exactly what happened next, but something prompted the officer to open fire at the armed man.

The 19-year-old man was hit by several shots and remains at Harborview Medical Center, but his exact condition was not known.

Detectives were expected to be on scene at Pritchard Beach Park through the morning while they collect evidence.

The victim in the first shooting was also being treated at Harborview, and investigators were working to determine a motive for that attack.
