COLUMBIA CITY – Columbia City will swing with the sounds of a summer Jazzathon this weekend when more than 40 musicians will each play 50 songs or more in the all-day gig.
The free event is planned for Sat., July 21, from 11 am to 7 pm at six locations along Rainier Avenue South, including Tutta Bella, Jus Bar, Starbucks, Lottie’s Lounge, The Royal Room and Empire Espresso Bar.
The Jazzathon, a fundraising event of the Seattle-based nonprofit organization Jazz Night School, is free of charge to attend. More than 40 participating musicians, who are students of the school, have obtained pledges on a per-songs-played basis, and will be attempting to reach personal goals of playing fifty songs or more.
“Jazz Night School is a supportive learning environment for students of all ages and abilities,” said executive director Erik Hanson. “This is a great place to learn jazz and to make connections with others in the community – come join us celebrate and participate in Seattle’s rich jazz tradition.”
The live bands will play standards written by jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis. Go here for more information or to make a pledge.
