RAINIER VALLEY – Next month, the Arts Gumbo series continues with an exploration of Brazilian culture through music, dance, food and cultural displays at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (3515 S. Alaska St.) in Columbia City.
On Sat., Oct. 13, starting at 6 pm, internationally acclaimed Brazilian band Show Brazil! will perform traditional and contemporary music and dance, while covering the best of the Brazilian Carnaval music. A native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil Eduardo Mendonça began performing in Seattle 11 years ago with his group Show Brazil! and has played throughout Western Washington and Brazil at various events and festivals.
Band members include Eduardo Mendonça, vocals/guitar/percussion; David Pascal, bass/back vocals; Josh Wilson, keyboard/back vocals; Kohen Burrill: drums/back vocals; Jes Brown, percussion/back vocals; Dora Oliveira, dance; and Diana Bohn, dance.
After the performance, Show Brazil! will move to the lower level and hold a dance workshop for audience members. With an emphasis on Samba, dancing will also include other Brazilian dances. A Taste of Brazil will follow featuring Pão de Queijo (Brazilian cheese bread); Mousse de Maracujá (Passion Fruit mousse); and Guaraná (Brazilian soft drink). Textile, instrument and visual exhibits will set the mood for an exploration of Brazil.
Then on Sat., Nov. 10, Arts Gumbo: Argentina! will present the elegant, passionate dance music of Tangabrazo, a Tango dance workshop for audiences along with Argentinean food.
Tickets for Arts Gumbo 2012 can be purchased here for $10 general; $7 seniors and students; $5 for children 2-12; and $25 for Families of Four or at the door.
