Save the Date: Sidewalks Coming to South Orcas Street

The community is invited to join the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) for an open house on Thur., June 16, 6:30 to 8 pm, at Dearborn Park Elementary School (2820 S. Orcas St.) to new sidewalk, curb and street trees proposed for South Orcas Street between Beacon Avenue South and 28th Avenue South.

According to SDOT, if funding becomes available, the project could continue on the south side to 32nd Avenue South and may include bicycle improvements.

Also at the meeting, project staff will explain the pedestrian and bicycle programs planned for Dearborn Park Elementary School.

    IF? IF? Of course funding is available! What a silly comment. We’ve been hearing the same comment for decades. It’s always the same thing; there’s not enough money for repairs and improvements. Whether boom times or recession, there’s never enough money for SE Seattle projects.

    Each day, thousands of SDOT employees and managers go to work, punch the time clock, pick up shovels, and go to work in our city. Each day they undertake different projects —-usually someplace north of 98118. Ask yourself, how often do you see the big city trucks & equipment in your neighborhood? Whether or not you see SDOT at work, they’re working someplace in the city every day.

    IF funding becomes available? The funding IS available. I encourage readers to show up, in numbers, and demonstrate support for the Orcas improvements and for other improvements in SE Seattle. These improvements may not happen if you don’t show up to this meeting.

    The failure to speak up is a primary reason why 98118 was declared “under-served” by city services. Please do your part to let the city know that you’re proud of your neighborhood and you expect your fair share of maintenance and investment dollars spent here.

  2. My home has been waiting for curbs and the like for more than fifty years, when will we get our curbs that we already paid for?

  3. I love that the biker is provided 3′ of clearance to the truck in the graphic! The bottom line is that the sharrow creates a hazardous situation for both auto/truck traffic and the biker when all three are coincident to a spot.
